Since 2008, stillnessspeaks.com has been a leading resource for “self inquiry and self exploration – the endless journey of self realization.” Unfortunately, the site had been built on a non-mobile responsive custom PHP engine. By 2016, the site was in need of a complete overhaul. For this project, we exported all the custom PHP database content and imported it back into WordPress. We reorganized the site to interconnect content related to teachers, rraditions, and resources (PDFs, videos, etc.)

Canton provides an outstanding, professional web development experience in every regard: design, quality, price, fast/on-time delivery, and ongoing support along with best-priced managed hosting.

I’ve worked with Canton since 2007 on many websites (as a direct client and indirectly for my other clients) and he’s been consistent in every regard for every project. He’s always my 1st choice for any web development project (mine or my clients). I’ve even delayed a project so he could do the site!

Canton’s site designs are beautiful, his technical (& other) advice is always well considered and on the mark. And he is always at the cutting edge of web development technology.

Canton’s work is of the highest quality and is always within his original budget estimates, and if not then always with a justifiable reason. He always delivers on time and is faster than any other web developer I’ve worked with.

Earlier this week I stayed up late but wasn’t having much look seeing any of the promised Orionids meteors. So instead I shot a spooky Halloween self-portrait. Believe it or not, this image is straight out of the camera. No Photoshop! “Light painting” is a technique where you use a long shutter exposure and a light source (flash, flashlight, laser) to “paint” light into the scene. Here, I’m using my cell phone as the light source, and I’m moving around in my orange hoodie to create the ghostly effect.

Here are some other images from the same shoot. You can see how stars actually move pretty darn fast, as these photos spanned only a 22 minute period.

A client posed me with this tricky challenge for Google Apps mail routing:

“How do I make it so that any email sent to info@mydomain.com OR sales@mydomain.com OR marketing@mydomain.com gets CC’d to boss1@mydomain.com AND boss2@gmail.com?”

Buried deep inside of Google Apps, there’s a super slick way to do this, even without having to login to the info/sales/marketing accounts.

  1. Login to Google Apps as a super admin
  2. In the search field, search for “default routing“. (This is the fast way to navigate to Apps -> Google Apps -> Gmail -> Default routing.)
  3. Under Default routing, click ADD SETTING. Here are the settings you want:
    1. Specify envelope recipients to match: Pattern Match
      Regexp: ^(info|sales|marketing)@mydomain.com$
    2. If recipient matches, do the following: Also deliver to (add boss1@mydomain.com and boss2@gmail.com)
    3. Options: Perform this action on non-recognized and recognized addresses

That’s it! Be very careful typing in the Regexp, e.g. don’t leave off the trailing $ sign. Also, setting the option to include recognized addresses is important. I forgot to change this the first time, and the rule didn’t work because info@mydomain.com etc. were recognized addresses, so the rule was never triggered.

Another method that doesn’t require super administrative powers, and which doesn’t trigger vacation autoresponders:

If boss1@mydomain.com or boss2@gmail.com have out-of-the-office autoresponders turned on, then people emailing info@mydomain.com WILL get those vacation messages. If this is not acceptable, then you’ll have to solve this problem in a more round-about way:

  1. Login in info@mydomain.com’s gmail account
  2. Create a filter whose only requirement is that the email was sent to info@mydomain.com
  3. The action of the filter should be to forward to boss1@mydomain.com
  4. Now create ANOTHER filter that forwards to boss2@gmail.com
  5. Repeat steps 1-4 for sales@mydomain.com and marketing@mydomain.com

This method takes a lot longer, not only because you have to login to each account individually to setup the filters, but because you’ll have to have access to the email accounts for boss1 and boss2 so as to click the links that allow forwarding for each of the filters you setup.

If you use Google Apps for your email service, how do you export or list all of your email accounts and email aliases without clicking through each account one by one? Here’s how:

  1. Login as the an administrator for the Google Apps account
  2. Navigate to Apps
  3. Click on Gmail
  4. Click on Advanced Settings »
  5. Select Email addresses

That’s it. You should now be looking at a chart showing Email addresses, Type (account vs. alias) and Recipient. If you highlight the chart and copy it, this will paste very nicely into Excel.

As a shortcut, this URL might work for you, if you edit it to include your own domain name:

https://admin.google.com/YOURDOMAIN.COM/AdminHome?fral=1#ServiceSettings/service=email&subtab=addresses

export-google-apps-addresses

At the bottom of this page you’ll also see an option to export this list as an Excel file, but at the time of this writing the .xls file omitted the aliases, only showing full blown accounts. (Bug?)

Mailchimp has a handy feature where it can embed a list of clickable Mailchimp-hosted archives of your email newsletters. Unfortunately, if your site is served over https, then Mailchimp’s “Folder Archive Generator” Javascript code doesn’t work in modern browsers. This is because the JS tries to retrieve the archive over http which creates a mixed encrypted/non-encrypted content page on your site.

And you can’t just change the URL from http://us9.campaign… to https://us9.campaign… because Mailchimp doesn’t have SSL certificates running on those domains.

A Solution

Mailchimp doesn’t have an alternative SSL-based server you can use, so you’ll have to either code against their API, or do a PHP hack like this:

$mailchimpArchives = file_get_contents('http://us9.campaign-archive2.com/generate-js/?u= abc123&fid=12345&show=10');
echo('');

In redesigning www.jimrabby.com, the client wanted a very clean and minimal website to showcase the prolific amount of work produced by the artist. (At the time of launch, over 400 paintings were included.)

One of my goals was to make sure that the client could edit the website with a minimum of fuss and training. One of the things I love about WordPress is that it’s possible to customize the administrative interface to make editing a completely intuitive process. The interface clearly shows “paintings”, and provides custom fields that are relevant to the task: canvas size, price, etc.

With this customized WordPress backend, adding new paintings is as easy as uploading a single high resolution image and specifying the title, price, dimensions and category. From this, everything is automatically generated – from the thumbnail views to the mobile-responsive layouts.

rabby-editor

To help market the paintings, I integrated the website with my favorite email service provider, MailChimp. Visitors are invited to sign up for the mailing list, and once added, receive automatically generated monthly emails that showcase paintings that have been recently added to the website.

After registering a new domain name, you may receive an email like this one:

pureregistration-scam

It’s a scam. It did not come from the same place where you purchased your domain name. This company watches the WHOIS database and sends unsolicited email to new registrants, which is illegal. They want to fool you into signing up for unnecessary (paid) services.

Here’s what you do:

  1. Flag the email as spam so that your email service provider starts blocking these on everyone’s behalf
  2. Setup a filter to send anything from ‘domainsubmission.club’ to spam, because you have already been added to their mailing list
  3. If you REALLY want to be a good citizen, contact the attorney general in Nevada to get this company shut down. Update: See comment #8 from the NV Attorney General below.

To: Nevada Attorney General

To whom it may concern:

The company “Pure Registration” which lists its address as 848 N. Rainbow Blvd. #5474 Las Vegas NV, 89107 is engaging in illegal activities to dupe consumers into signing up for their commercial service.
The company apparently monitors the registration of new websites via publicly available WHOIS records and send unsolicited emails to the website registrants. This is an illegal use of WHOIS public information. Further, they add those emails to a mailing list without the registrant opting in. This is also illegal.
The email they send out is fraudulent in that they claim that their service is required to “Complete Site Submission [Final Step]”. The intent of their email is to fool the recipient into thinking that their service is a requirement to completing a legitimate business transaction they initiated with their own domain name registrar — a completely separate company.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.

f710-gaming-gamepad-imagesThese instructions for how to setup the Logitech F710 gamepad (joystick) for Mavericks / Yosemite / OS X Macintosh were originally posted on now-defunct macgamepads.com.

Setup

The trick is to plug in the receiver while the controller is actively connecting.

Hardware/Software

  • Logitech F710 controller (included with F710 purchase).
  • USB Nano-receiver (included with F710 purchase).
  • Optional – Gamepad Companion or Joystick Show application.

Steps

  1. Unplug the nano-receiver.
  2. Put the F710 controller into DirectInput mode using D switch on front of controller.
  3. Launch Gamepad Companion or Joystick Show, if you have either of these apps. This is nice for verification, but not required for connectivity or use with games that natively support the F710.
  4. Activate the F710 gamepad (move the controls until a light blinks at least once) so it’s trying to connect to the receiver.
  5. Plug the receiver into the USB port, while the controller is actively connecting to it.

Notes

  • If you have VMWare running, you may need to run a Windows VM so you can tell VMWare to give the device to the Mac, not the VM, when it’s detected. From what I can tell the device just silently doesn’t appear. I haven’t tried stopping VMWare helper, or seeing if I can configure it differently.

I’ve had the pleasure and good fortune of being Upaya’s webmaster since 2007, when they first asked me to modernize their system for registering visitors for meditation retreats and trainings. However it wasn’t until 2013 that we had a chance to completely redesign the look and feel of the website from scratch.

Upaya’s Abbot, Roshi Joan Halifax, wanted a dramatic new look for the site that reflected the intensity of Upaya’s commitment to compassionate engagement. The challenge was to come up with a design that was both bold and welcoming at once.

The 2014 redesign for www.upaya.org

The 2015 redesign for www.upaya.org

Everyone was in agreement that to accommodate the size and scope of the site, we needed to overhaul our old sidebar-based navigation system. To guide visitors’ attention to the rich resources we made available (such as daily dharma podcasts, videos, teachings, and weekly programs) we implemented a “mega dropdown” menu organized into three easily interpreted tabs: About Upaya, Teachings, and Our Programs.

What I like about mega dropdowns is that instead of trying to organize a website site into a hierarchy of categories and page names (and hoping that those page names make perfect sense to visitors) mega dropdowns give us the opportunity to describe in detail what’s available using text and images:

upaya-dropdown

Meanwhile, behind the scenes, virtually all of the website content was migrated into WordPress so that Upaya’s staff could easily edit any page. My custom PHP/MySQL content management system continues to drive the program calendar, registrations, and fundraising portions of the site since these have been tailored to exactly match Upaya’s business workflow and finance/banking technologies.

Sketches

This project was slow-cooked over a period of almost a year. Much of the planning was conducted with old-school technology: paper, pen, and real-life meetings. Here’s a sketch and a “bucket list” that informed the ultimate design and navigation for the site:

Have you ever tried to embed a “public URL” Dropbox link in an tag—as you might for a blog post, forum post, or any HTML file? If so, you’ve experienced the problem that Dropbox “public links” are not direct links to the image file itself, but rather to an interstitial page that frames the image and gives you options for downloading the file, etc. Not embeddable at all.

Here’s the solution:

After you copy the public Dropbox link to your clipboard, just change ?dl=0 to ?raw=1 at the end of the URL.

If you leave the link as ?dl=0, although it will look like a link to an image, it will really link to the interstitial non-embeddable Dropbox page that frames the image or invites people to signup for Dropbox.

For example, the screenshot you see above is in fact hosted on Dropbox like this:

If I had left the link as ?dl=0, although it would have looked like a link to an image, it would really have been the link to the interstitial non-embeddable Dropbox page that frames the image or invites people to signup for Dropbox.

Pro Tip

Did you know Dropbox will let you automatically share screen captures? Just look in your Dropbox settings / preferences:

On a Mac, type shift+command+4 to screen capture any portion of your screen. Dropbox will then automatically add the screen capture to your dropbox, and copy the Public Link to your clipboard. This puts you one step away from pasting the link (don’t forget the ?raw=1) into a forum post or email.

Glenn Aparicio Parry’s book “Original Thinking: A Radical Revisioning of Time, Humanity, and Nature” speaks about our relationship with time and the lands we inhabit. The intent of the site was to invite the visitor into a uniquely primitive space that could be experienced almost like a window into nature.

The home page uses a scrolling technique to create a graphically rich “splash page” without actually harming how the page performs in search engine results.

Subtle multimedia refinements add to the experience: on the home page, sounds from nature and a gentle (not overly distracting) soundtrack ground the experience. The moon you see in the design reflects the actual state of the moon right now. The site itself moves through time.

What phase is the moon right now? Visit the website to find out.

Short answer: You probably can’t, which is another reason friends shouldn’t let friends use GoDaddy.

At least, I’ve confirmed that this is the case with GoDaddy’s turnkey “managed” WordPress hosting service. If you’re a developer unlucky enough to have to work within this hosting plan, and if you’re trying to modify your template files via FTP, you may notice that your changes aren’t taking effect right away. Apparently to reduce the load on their servers, GoDaddy has added a caching feature which cannot be disabled. (It’s probably implemented at the server level, not as a WordPress plugin at all.)

The quickest way to force your page to load fresh is to add an unnecessary variable to the end of your URL each time you reload the page, like so:

http://yourgodaddysite.com/your-page-name/?junk=1

Just increment the junk variable each time you need to reload the page: junk=2, junk=3, etc.

Alternatively, if you login to the WordPress dashboard, you’ll find a Flush Cache button at the very top of the screen, just to the left of GoDaddy Settings. If the mandatory caching is too much of a headache, contact GoDaddy and ask them to switch you over to a traditional hosting plan and install WordPress yourself. Or switch to a better web host.
